To track our boat journey, please click here. You are now looking at the route of our journey. Our boat is located at the black and white dot on the map. The green teardrops are the places we have visited or plan to visit. And at the top left, there is a summary of our journey - showing the number of destinations we will visit, miles traveled, fuel consumed, and bridges and locks along the way. Click on the navigation tab labeled 'Itinerary'. This tells you “when we will be where” (note that our plans change quite often).
If you would like to play with this application, back on the 'Journey' tab, start by clicking on some of the checkboxes under View On Map. For example, click on the bottom one 'Differentiate Marinas with Fuel' checkbox. This changes some teardrops to red - indicating that they do not have the type of fuel (diesel vs. gas) needed by our boat. Click on the 3rd checkbox up 'Marinas Not Visited'. You may have to zoom in on the map by double clicking a few times to see the small circles. These are marinas available to be visited with a click of the mouse. Click on 'Locks' to see the locks along the route. Click on bridges. The color of the bridge is based on the Air Height of the selected boat (the boat has to stop for the red ones, put down the boat's antennas for the yellow ones, but the green ones are not an issue. Click on the 'Select a Boat' triangle. Use the dropdown to select a different boat and note what happens to the summary at the top left. That is, look at how the speed of the boat determines the time spent on the boat and the fuel burn, and note how the Air Height changes the color of the bridges. You may also want to play with 'Customize the Route'. Or, better yet, click the top triangle 'Journey' and create a new journey of your own. You will be adding and deleting a swath of the route. Remember that whatever you do, it is only temporary. Next, click the word 'Itinerary' near the top of the page. This provides a more concise list of our destinations. With your curser on the table, it scrolls independently of the rest of the page. The left column, labeled 'HL' stands for highlight. Click a checkbox to highlight that row. It will automatically be highlighted back on the map page. Next, play with the triangle checkbox options on the left to learn more about each destination. The top triangle is the 'Rows to View', uncheck 'Visited Only' to see many other marinas along the route. At any particular location in the table, click the 'Visit' checkbox of a marina that is not currently being visited, and uncheck one of the ones currently being visited. That's how easy it is to change plans. And note how the 'Arrive' and 'Depart' columns change with each click. The lower triangle, 'Columns to View' enables adding/deleting columns in the table. Click on 'Fuel Remaining' (the 5th one down). You can see that we run out of fuel sometime in the future. Now, add the 'Fill Up' column by clicking on the 'Fill Up' checkbox on the left (just after 'Depart'), and click on some of the checkboxes under that new column. Note that the only destinations that have a checkbox for fuel are the ones that offer the fuel required by the selected boat. Click on 'Waterway Guide' (5th from the bottom), and click on 'WWG' in one of the rows. It will bring up the Waterway Guide with the selected marina in the middle of the map. Clicking on that image brings up lots more information on the marina (including boater reviews) AND allows one to see other potential marinas nearby. Finally, click the word 'Leg' near the top to see the leg we are on today - including information on leaving the marina we are in and entering the one we are headed toward. And please provide feedback on places we should visit, and also feedback on your experience with this applications.
